The cost to the Public for the past year is therefore only £19,880, while the last vote was £50,000. As I have stated before, I see no reason why this Colony should not defray the whole of its Expenditure out of its Revenue, as soon as its public works have been completed.
I mean that its public works will be completed in six months more, and I only wait Your Lordship's sanction to Despatch No.83 of 24th July 1847 to purchase a very handsome Court House for the sum of £5,000, at the recommendation of the Commanding Royal Engineer and the Surveyor-General, enclosed in that Despatch.
I observe that Mr. Montgomery Martin, in giving his evidence before a Committee of the House of Commons, stated that the Expenditure on account of Civil Charges by the Governor's Despatch was £4,700, the Expenditure for the year elapsed being £15,180, the excess of Expenditure beyond the Revenue has been only for one year.
Of Public buildings, nothing remains to be undertaken but the Governor's own residence. A Road will in two months more have been carried round the whole Island, a distance of Twenty-four miles, much of it cut through granite Rocks - A Church and Public Offices will have been completed.
I should be surprised if he had stated it at £500,000, and I should be more surprised if he had stated it at a whole Million.
I have the honor to be,
With the highest respect,
